Health Promotion and Financial Investment: Rowan Griffin and Andrew Cole from Lendlease

Leadlease’s corporate headquarters at International Towers Sydney, Barangaroo South boasts a breathing green wall, nutritious food options, and wellness rooms. It is an exemplar of their innovative approach to developing sustainable, healthy buildings. We spoke to both Rowan Griffin, Head of Sustainability – Property and Andrew Cole, Regional Sustainability Manager – Property who explain how a corporate focus on health and wellbeing (and its measurement and transparent reporting) makes sense for both their employees and their investors.
Delos: What motivates Lendlease to track and report ESG metrics?
AC: You can’t manage what you don’t measure. Our commitment to both environmental and social performance is smart for our business as we plan for the future. ESG performance helps differentiate us. It attracts capital investors who are seeking to benchmark performance, especially as it relates to building or asset managers. It’s also useful for attracting like-minded tenants for the workplaces we create and manage.
Delos: Do you think health promotion – and particularly building health – is relevant to ESG reporting?
RG: I believe ESG is moving toward people outcomes and people performance. We’re finding the health and wellbeing initiatives provided at Lendlease are changing the workplace culture. We’re proud of this uptake of healthy habits and behaviours.
AC: In the property and construction industries we need to partner across sectors to unlock the next drive in innovation. This is why design centered on health and wellness is so exciting – it brings together the medical and real estate professions with people who are eager to drive improvement in their corporate cultures.
Delos: What is Lendlease doing to integrate health and well-being directly into their own offices? How are you assessing your performance?
RG: Going through the WELL certification process has been really important for us because it has helped us direct the way we fit out our buildings and the way we occupy them. As a result, we have flexibility in our workplaces with options to either stand or sit at a desk, engage in activity-based working, and take the stairs between floors. We have healthy and nutritious food options, plants, and good sightlines and daylight so you can see what’s happening outside. These things are guided by WELL.
As we pursue WELL certification, the rating system helps us continually assess our performance. It’s difficult to assess benchmarks in most of the other programs we provide, besides making sure they are adequate, or more than adequate for our employees. A company is only as strong as the sum of its people. And we can’t talk about health, or performance without ensuring people come to work and leave work in the same state or better.
