Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik is bringing another partner into his development plans for downtown Tampa — one that will ensure the new district has a focus on health and wellness.

Strategic Property Partners, the real estate company controlled by Vinik and Cascade Investment LLC, will partner with New York-based Delos on the wellness initiative, which represents a $20 million investment. Vinik’s district will be the first “WELL Certified” district in the world, according to his team.

“We foresee our Tampa urban district setting a new standard for wellness and sustainability,” Vinik said in a statement.

Delos in 2012 made a Clinton Global Initiative commitment to create a health and wellness standard for buildings. The Clinton Global Initiative is a nonprofit organization founded by former President Bill Clinton to address international issues.

Vinik, Mayor Bob Buckhorn and Robbie Fritz of Cascade joined Clinton on stage in New York for the announcement.

Through Delos’ “Wellness Real Estate” program, the buildings in Vinik’s district will be WELL certified based on the following criteria: air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind.

“Cascade is committed to creating a world-class development in Tampa that offers the highest quality of life for its residents and users. Implementing health and wellness features throughout the district will help us achieve that,” Michael Larson, chief investment officer of Cascade Investment, said in a statement.

Nearly 20 million square feet of building projects in 12 countries has already been certified by the program.

The layout of the district will also be WELL certified, designed to encourage walkability with green space, sound barriers, access to healthy foods, air quality monitoring and waterfront access — “all of which contribute to the wellness and quality of life of the people who live and work in the development,” SPP said in a statement.
