Delos Makes Commitment at the Clinton Global Initiative
Delos®, the Pioneer of Wellness Real Estate™, Announces a New Standard In Healthy Living at the 2012 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting
The World’s First Building Standard Focused Exclusively on Human Health and Wellness
New York, NY (September 24, 2012) – Today, at the 2012 Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Annual Meeting, Delos®, the pioneer of Wellness Real Estate™, introduced the WELL Building Standard™, the world’s first building standard focused exclusively on enhancing people’s health and well-being in direct, evidence-based and innovative ways through the built environment. The WELL Building Standard was announced at the 2012 CGI Annual Meeting by President Clinton, Dr. Deepak Chopra, Jason F. McLennan and Terry McAuliffe as part of Delos’ CGI commitment to improve the way people live by developing spaces that optimize residents’ health and enhance their quality of life.
The WELL Building Standard is a result of six years of research, development and collaboration with a board of researchers and doctors from Columbia University Medical School, as well as with architects, engineers and contractors.
In their announcement today, as a CGI member, Delos committed to:
Complete construction of 41 wellness-themed hotel rooms that align with the WELL Building Standard by the end of 2012.
Complete construction of six residences and 500 office spaces that align with the WELL Building Standard by the end of 2013.
Introduce the WELL Building Standard to 7,280 individuals (6,000 workers and 1,280 residents) within five years, all of whom will directly benefit from this standard by spending substantial amounts of time in Delos environments including wellness offices and homes.
Impact 630,000 individuals who will stay in WELL Building Standard certified hotel rooms over a five-year period of time.
The Standard will be applicable across all building types including homes, hotels, offices, schools, community centers and hospitals. Pilot projects have already been introduced in the following categories: residential, hospitality, education and office.
The WELL Building Standard is the world’s first building standard focused exclusively on people’s health and wellness. With experienced partners like Shangri-La Industries and Webcor Builders, the standard is meant to seamlessly integrate and operate alongside new sustainability based building standards such as LEED and the Living Building Challenge.
“Just as LEED set the standard for environmental building, WELL addresses an equally critical input, which is enhanced human health and well-being,” said Delos Co-Founder, Morad Fareed. “Delos marries the best of science and technology with design and construction, curating a sustainability model that not only encompasses the best of green technology, but extends beyond it to a more integrated solution that elevates and addresses the importance of human sustainability.”
Delos brings a range of key implementing partners to the WELL Building Standard commitment including Dr. Deepak Chopra, world-renowned health and wellness expert, Jason F. McClennan, world-renowned sustainable building expert, Shangri-La Industries, the pioneering and innovative construction and development company and award-winning general contractor Webcor Builders, one of the largest green construction companies in the world.
“Shangri-La Industries and Webcor Builders are excited to partner with Delos and introduce the WELL Building Standard throughout the world,” said Steve Bing, Founder of Shangri-La Industries. “By combining our extensive experience with sustainable building and Delos’ innovative wellness designs, we will drive the evolution of healthy living standards and actively enhance well-being at the office, in schools, during hotel stays and in the home.”
Placing personal wellness and quality of life at the heart of its design and construction, the WELL Building Standard integrates the best of medical science and preventative healthcare to create living environments that support and protect the physical and emotional well-being of individuals. Each Delos living space is designed to combat the onset of disease and deteriorating health, dispel current ailments and improve one’s quality of life through innovative healthy living features.
Dr. Deepak Chopra notes, “When exploring the notion of sustainability, it is important to consider both environmental and biological impacts. Good health is a state of sustainability. The WELL Building Standard is an important next step in the process of developing sustainable real estate.”

About the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI):
Established in 2005 by President Bill Clinton, the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) convenes global leaders to create and implement innovative solutions to the world’s most pressing challenges. CGI Annual Meetings have brought together more than 150 heads of state, 20 Nobel Prize laureates, and hundreds of leading CEO’s, heads of foundations and NGOs, major philanthropists, and members of the media. To date, CGI members have made more than 2,100 commitments, which are already improving the lives of nearly 400 million people in more than 180 countries. When fully funded and implemented, these commitments will be valued at $69.2 billion.
CGI also convenes CGI America, a meeting focused on collaborative solutions to economic recovery in the United States, and CGI University (CGI U), which brings together undergraduate and graduate students to address pressing challenges in their community or around the world. This 2012 CGI Commitment to Action – now considered complete – is continuing beyond its original timeframe and goals. Since the WELL Building Standard® (WELL) was launched in October 2014, nearly 20 million square feet of commercial, institutional, and multifamily projects in the U.S. and globally have registered and certified through the WELL Building Standard. Delos established the International WELL Building Institute™ (IWBI), a public benefit corporation whose mission is to improve human health and well-being through the built environment, to administer the WELL Building Standard globally. IWBI has joined forces with Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), the same organization that administers LEED certification and the LEED professional credentialing program, to provide third-party certification for WELL. The WELL Building Standard was conceptualized and launched as a program to bring health and wellness to offices, homes and schools globally – and we are well underway towards achieving that vision.
