In December 2012, Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens opened the Center for Sustainable Landscapes (CSL) – a 24,350 square foot education, research, and administration facility. The project focused on incorporating elements of nature to address the connections between human health and ecological health.

The CSL is the first institution worldwide to be WELL Certified™ Platinum – Pilot Program, the highest rating awarded by IWBI. Among numerous wellness features, the building provides occupants with biophilic features such as proximity to indoor and outdoor gardens, as well as abundant access to natural light and ventilation. Built on a remediated brownfield site, the CSL also met the Living Building Challenge, LEED Platinum and 4 Stars Sustainable SITES certifications.
